Delta Mills

Harlan Peabody Ingersoll.jpg

"Erastus S. Ingersoll settled here in 1836 and constructed a water-powered sawmill. A gristmill was added, and in 1840 a resident wrote that people came from twenty miles around to have their flour made. A school modeled after Oberlin college was chartered as the “Grand River Theological Seminary,” but never opened. Platted as Grand River City in 1841, the village was commonly called Delta Mills after the township and main industry. The mill operated into the twentieth century." - http://www.michmarkers.com/startup.asp?startpage=L1458.htm

Delta Township is currently split into two different public school districts. The Grand Ledge Public Schools to the west and the Waverly Community Schools to the east with Creyts Rd serving as the general dividing line of the districts. In addition to the public schools there are several private and parochial schools operating in the township.

Lansing Community College asl has a campus located in the Township and is home to the Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) and a Technical Training Center. The Great Lakes Christian College opened its first building in 1872 on the corner of Creyts and Willow.

The first school in Delta Township opened in 1839 in Delta Mills, but other one-room school houses popped up prior to the formation of the Grand Ledge and Waverly school districts including Delta Center, Millet, Bretton Woods, Winans, Zacariah Shool, Dolly Varden School, Nixon School among others.
